I was surprised how many riders were flouting the helmet law last time I was in the big smoke. Do the cops ever ticket people or do they use common sense?
@ bike friendly - realistically, they have much bigger problems in the 'big smoke'. And quite rightly, they deploy their limited resources carefully. In the last few days, I have intercepted a fair few coppers whilst lidless and have elicited no response ... I actually wanted a particular pair to pull me up on Saturday as I was primed to point out the crowd of beggars that were drinking, sniffing glue and pestering people by 'washing' their windscreens ... alas, they ignored both me and the beggars.
On a brief jaunt round a few northern tourist spots a week back - Big Smoke, Roto-Vegas and Taupo - I was amazed/delighted by how many people were riding round like normal people (no lycra, no helmet). I'd say normality is past 50% in Rotorua and Taupo. Could be the insidious influence of the outside world.
Sadly, back down here in Palmy North (flat as; doggone perfect for bikes), almost everyone wears helmets and the police still ensure it stays that way. *sigh*
WHAT - no helmets? so they died in flames at the next intersection?
