Melbourne - Day one

Melbourne has come quite a long way since I lived there 10 years ago ... there are bicycles everywhere ... proper actual styley bicycles!

Some beautiful retro ones like we have in Auckland

But also some new bicycles like this model that we saw all over Melbourne ... we found this particular model in a shop for only $399!!

"Well no wonder" I hear you say.

Every lamp post was adorned with cycle bling!

And every rack was claimed (and there were lots of them - please take note ACC)

We even spied some cargo bikes ... this is definitely a trend just waiting to happen in NZ!

(I've made contact with Feetz cycles and am working out the details for importing my 'helmet-free' tricycle ... anyone else want one?)

There were some styley riders wearing their own clothes ...

Basket bikes galore ...

And some were even enjoying the wind in their hair

Their helmet fine is pretty steep over in Australia but they obviously also have hard-working policemen, like we do, who are solving 'proper' crimes

However, they do still have quite a few of these 'cyclists' ...

And the shops ... I won't tell you how much we spent ... it will make your eyes water!

Arrhhh!! oooohhh!! uuummm!!

And then of course, there was the gathering of cycling peeps ... recognise anyone?

Bike rack ... pleeeeease!

I would very much like a bike rack outside my building. Not much to ask ... I have good reasons ...
  • It's a heritage building with no car parking
  • Several of the residents, employees and visitors have bicycles
  • It's a busy area for cyclists
  • There is a dairy and several restaurants and businesses along this strip that are visited by cyclists
Originally there was this disused bus stop ... covered in graffiti, it attracted drunk people late at night ... noisy!

Then after several years of complaining (yes, several years!!) they took the bus stop away ... we were happy! So I thought ... a bicycle rack ... that would be nice.

We had a good case and the inspectors came out and said that it is a good position .... BUT THEN ... nothing happened.

I'm not asking for much ... nothing flash ... just a couple of hoops like this would be fabulous

We have need ... this is the current, keenly sought after, bicycle parking

Having enquired for the sixty millionth time, I am now told that they need a 'strategy'. They couldn't go ahead and make any rash decisions without a 'strategy'.

I am a little miffed.

However, looking at some of their current site selection for bicycle racks, and in the obvious absence of common sense, perhaps they do need a 'strategy' after all!

The bike racks seen in the centre of the above picture are down an alley and then around a corner - I don't know about you but I would not be happy leaving my bike on these racks in daylight never mind venturing down there after dark - what were they thinking!!

Is my bicycle too fat?

I really love the fact that the Northern Steamship bar has thought to install a bike rack ...

But I'm not really sure how to approach it. It's a little bit flimsy; possibly designed for fairly light weight sports bicycles? I get the impression that my bicycle will squash it! Luckily there is also a substantial Pohutakawa tree just opposite.

Cycle Style Evening - Street style

Then there was the street style section of the show ...

(unfortunately, not all of the street style crew were photographed - sorry guys)

These guys really rocked ...

and showed the crowd what is happening on 'a street near you'

Plus these guys really know how to ride a bike and work the crowd!

Yours truly (thanks Good magazine for the photo). This was also the first official 'coming out' for the Triumph. She looked beautiful and is a credit to Tim and Brian at T. Whites who restored her for me - I did the bit where you point at things ... and pay!
