Cycle Style Event

We have been totally inspired by events such as these ...

So Frocks on Bikes in Auckland are putting on an evening of Cycle Style that includes a 'Try my Bike' section, with a great range of styley bikes to test ride and drool over, and a fashion show. We've secured a brilliant venue down at the Viaduct and it's going to be fab!

Check out the details and register NOW! Tickets are limited ... she said, sounding like a Harvey Normans advert!

Seasons

Alas, I feel that summer has gone. Here are a few remaining 'summer' pictures that I have still to be posted ...

The Husband's bicycle having just returned from a Saturday trip to the Britomart Farmer Market.

This lovely lady had just arrived at Uni in some fabulous summer colours!

Orange and waiting to cross

These happy people belong to a girl gang called FAB ... 'Fourth Avenue Bitches', if I remember correctly!

But now it is darker ...

And wet!

BUT

Staying warm can be fun too

And this beautiful bicycle looks stunning next to autumn leaves!

Chase me!

Nice little tune and cool cycle chic video ...

That's one of the best things about riding a bike ... all those gorgeous young men that chase after you! Unfortunately, I haven't noticed much of this kind of thing in Auckland ... maybe I'm living in the wrong town!

Guys

Stylish fellas around town ...

How cool is this ... cycling to the park to practice tight rope walking!

Chillin' in the park

This guys hot! - you can tell because he has two water bottles.

This guy is sooo cool!

Wow, who knew I could do this with my camera! - he's even cool when he's smudged like this!

This guy gets around. He's just doing his own thing - nice!

Covert operations

Most of the time I take pictures of people with their consent, in return for one of my highly sort after Cycle Chic business cards ... but occasionally I capture the cyclists of our fair city by stealth!

Waiting

Crossing

Launching

Crossing

I see these young lads quite often and they always seem to be having heaps of fun!

Classic Kiwi

I wonder what they are talking about ...

Uni Cycles

There is definitely an increases in styley ladies on styley bicycles around the university ...

I've spotted this lady a few times but only managed to whip out my camera fast enough just this once.

I've admired this bicycle several times as I walk past the bike racks but only managed to intercept its owner just the other day.

Now this guy I see regularly - he seems to have an aversion to studying at a desk ... or perhaps he studies better in close proximity to bicycles ...

Here he is again with a different bicycle (apparently the other one belongs to his girlfriend). Different bench, different bicycle, still no desk.

You can't put us in a box

There is such a range of different people riding bikes in the city ... I don't think 'cyclist' covers it.

You don't see many of these around - is this guy making an "I'm a bit different" statement?

Nifty transport option - this guy is perhaps saying "I'm not wasting time and the planets resources in a traffic jam"

Intrepid traveller - is this guy telling us "I enjoy rugged outdoor adventures, I'm just passing through"?

City slicker - what's this guy's angle? Perhaps "I'm an urbanite, a man of the 21st century - cars are sooo last century!"

What are you 'saying' on your bike?

Baskets

In the olden days baskets were big!

People carried stuff

To carry stuff, you need baskets. Baskets are things of goodness and turn a bicycle into a very useful machine. I go to the Britomart farmers market on mine and the transport of an entire weeks fruit and veg is simplicity itself!

This bicycle has 3 baskets ... coool!

The nextbike bikes have baskets of course, as any true city bike should. They move independently of the handlebars in a very strange but entertaining way.

This guy need a basket

This guy has one

This bicycle has a sort of shelf instead ... still fit for purpose and quite styley too ... although apples or eggs may present a challenge!

Here is your traditional wicker basket

And a more modern interpretation

This one with added functionality - although that fluoro strip looks a little past its best!

Some people of course will always take things to extremes!! Now that's a basket!

Safety

Is fluoro the new black? Is there a fire sale on this fabric? Is it an image thing? Why are these gardeners wearing fluoro?

So, I get the bicycle - it's a great transport mode for zipping around the park to where you're needed. I get the road cone - you don't want unsuspecting members of the public disappearing down a hole in the ground. But why the fluoro vests? These gardeners are in the middle of a park ... a park without any cars ...

This looks like a peaceful enough scene - gardener quietly trimming the edge of the lawn. In days gone by the gardener would be going about his work in a pleasant green outfit and we would be spared this visual assault!

What do they think is going to happen? - perhaps the lady in the white t-shirt will suddenly rush towards the herbaceous boarder, without noticing the gardener, thrust her foot between the blades of that lethal gardening tool, accidentally severing her toe and ending her career as a ballet dancer ...

This is the ferry terminal. When I first went on the ferry, some years ago now, it was perfectly safe. Not now - according to the warning signs, it's dangerous to go through those gates when they're closed, the surface of the ramp is now dangerous too, and at the other end there is a step that it absolutely lethal. There is a warning sign to tell you not to jump off the ramp after the boat has left and another to tell you not to jump off the pier at all, and of course there are signs warning you about the presence of fuel on the pier and a flashing sign with a loud siren that alerts you when the freight trolleys are being moved ... and that's all before you've even got on the boat! God forbid what could happen at sea!

I think I'll stay on my bike ... that ferry looks very dangerous and you'd have to be an idiot to take your chances in that park!!

Past my bed time

The other night I was out cruising the city in the dark. Sometimes I feel a little vulnerable amongst the 4 wheel drives as people head home after a few customary Friday night drinks. So ... I have to admit to committing the cardinal sin of Cycle Chic ... I have bought some special cycle gear!!

This is my new 'high vis' cycling poncho - wall to wall sequins! I picked it up in the Glassons sale for $20 - bargain! It definitely works; I got some whistles, some toots, and a "hey look at that" - I got the distinct impression that people saw me!

The husband also had fun riding behind me and creating a sort of disco thing with the strobe light on his bicycle, and the street lights created a beautiful rainbow effect. Improvements we are considering include adding a music system with sub woofer and flashing coloured lights!

This guy was also out enjoying the night on a very nice machine

and even took the time to show off some of his cycle tricks - clever stuff!

Then I came across this guy looking ineffably cool as he paused at the lights
