Re-cycle style

Check out this example of kiwi ingenuity

A mud guard crafted from a plastic fizzy drinks bottle!

BTW has anyone constructed a list of novel uses for ex fizzy drinks bottles, and the like?

Transportation lovelyness

I was shopping in Newmarket to get a few things for my new apartment. I was loaded down with bags and very nearly missed my bus, but this shot was worth running for ...

This lady has obviously got her style vibes in order - mine wasn't the only head turning as she rode by.

Why is Britomart inside out?

Take a look at all these city squares ...

Brussels

London

Prague

Lille

Spot anything?

  • They are city squares surrounded by old buildings - Britomart tick
  • They have lovely cafes and bars around them - Britomart tick
  • They often have markets with fresh local produce - Britomart tick
  • They don't have carparks in the middle of them - Britomart fail
  • They have lots of people in them buying things from the shops around the square - Bitomart fail
  • Their shops face inwards towards the square to create a destination - Britomart fail
Britomart

Cars, cars and more cars - aaargh!

Oh look ... some more cars!

And the backs of buildings - It can't be that hard to add an entry, some signage and perhaps a window?

Why is Britomart not the city square of Auckland? Why is it not a destination where friends meet at the fountain for a days shopping or a night out? Why does it not have a great name to identify it (Britomart Square would do!) with signposts to lead the public into the space? Why is it so deserted that bicycle racks get vandelised? Who wants to sit at a cafe and watch the carpark, or the buses thunder by? (Hint: people like to watch people) Why oh why is Britomart inside out with a CARPARK in the middle of it?

Why bicycles are so great ...

You can't do this with a car, not even a 4-wheel drive ...

Spot the bicycle?

Townsville Cycle Chic

Just back from a trip to Townsville in Australia. Here is what I discovered ...

There are quite a few council signs for cyclists - although many of them are negative.

On no account must you have fun in this playground! I love the pink bicycle in the background - you go girl!

However, they have got some cool bicycle facilities. This bicycle carousel is great and notice how you place your wheels in the grooves - tres groovy!

Townsville also has these wonderful pedal powered security ladies that petrol the waterfront - absolutely gorgeous and so helpful.

I spotted some great bicycles during my trip - a very nicely made ACT (Australian Capital Territory) number plate on this bicycle basket.

And this has to be the epitome of a tropical bicycle with a sun hat AND a cycle helmet - I wonder if they're worn together or is the helmet for handlebar safety!

I snapped some of the local cycle chic. Contrary to first impressions, these are actually his street clothes - this appeared to be a classic Townsville outfit (shorts and a singlet). In fact I didn't see any lycra cycling gear during my entire trip, but in that tropical climate, I imagine that lycra and spandex etc. are probably not the first thing you reach for in a morning!
